The String-A-Longs reunited at the Clovis Music Festival in Clovis, New Mexico on September 7, 2006. Richard, Keith, Aubrey and Jimmy were excited about returning to Clovis and playing together again, but Don Allen (the drummer) was the holdout. He finally agreed that he would come to Clovis "for the picture," but no way would he play. When Jimmy called him to find out when he would arrive, Don indicated he was on his way over from Planeview, but he "would need a set of drums." Jimmy's jaw dropped so far that he almost needed jaw surgery to wire his jaw back into place. A practice drum set was located (the original one from the Petty Studio, in fact) and the whole group was playing together again like they stepped back in time, strutting their stuff as pioneers of rock n' roll. Other than being a little rusty, having gray hair, more around the middle and a few wrinkles, it was just like seeing the String-A-Longs in the early 1960s!
They played the old favorites--"Wheels," "Mina Bird," "Twist Watch," "Sunday," "Matilda," and others, including "Sugar Shack," which they recorded but never released because they "didn't like the song." Well, so much for the String-A-Longs' taste in music! The Clovis people did a DVD, but it doesn't appear to be released yet. Watch their website www.cmf06.com for that release.
Every member of the group was ecstatic about being back together and playing together after all these years. It appears that others were excited also. Ace Records has just released a CD of tunes recorded by the String-A-Longs back when, but never released. These tunes were locked up in the Petty Studio archives for all these years. The CD includes cuts of "Wheels," "Matilda," "Mina Bird" and a few others that are familiar, but also includes vocals--stuff you never heard from the String-A-Longs. The CD is entitled "The Tex-Mex Teen Magic of the String-A-Longs" and you can get it at www.acerecords.com or www.amazon.com (do an artist search for the String-A-Longs.
The String-A-Longs (by virtue of an interview with Keith McCormack and Aubrey DeCordova) were very pleasantly surprized to find themselves the cover story for Pipeline Magazine, Issue 73, New Year, 2007. It is a great article and worth checking out at www.pipelinemag.co.uk.
Other great news is that Jimmy leaves on March 21, 2007 for The Netherlands where he will join up with Eduardo Bartrina and other Shadows fans to attend and play a set at the Shadows Fanmeeting in Tilburg on March 30 and 31, 2007. From there, he will accompany Eduardo back to Madrid and join Los Jets (www.losjets.com)in the recording studio for a guest appearance on their upcoming album, which will include some Jimmy Torres' original tunes. Then Eduardo and Jimmy will fly to London to attend the Pipeline Magazine 2007 convention. Europe rocks. Eduardo and Los Jets rock. Jimmy is jazzed!

"Freighted with steel guitars, mandolins, and tinkling piano ripples, Uncommon Man spools right back to the days when country music really was country music."
